Inversion Analysis on Surface Wave Dispersion Curves and H/V Spectra by Neighbourhood Algorithm

1. Abstract In order to predict strong earthquake ground motion, it is inevitable to construct a relevant subsurface structure model, especially S-wave velocity structure of the site of consideration. Inversion analysis with micro-tremor observation is frequently used to acquire S-wave velocity structure due to its convenience and inexpensiveness. Usually inversion analysis is carried out for either dispersion curves or H/V spectra (Spectral ratio of horizontal component to vertical component on the ground surface); however, simultaneous inversion might be advantageous to cover deeper depth and expanded frequency range. In this paper, we have studied applicability of the Neighbourhood algorithm for the simultaneous inversion of dispersion curves and H/V spectra with numerically synthesized data as well as the ones obtained by micro-tremor observation. First, we compared single inversion for either synthesized Rayleigh wave dispersion curves or synthesized Rayleigh wave H/V ratio to simultaneous inversion for both of them to find the advantage of the simultaneous inversion in terms of precisely evaluated S-wave velocity structure with layer thickness fixed. Then we carried out micro tremor array observation at water front district of Tokyo to evaluate surface wave dispersion curves by SPAC (Space autocorrelation coefficient) method and H/V spectra. From these examples, we can empirically conclude effectiveness of Neighbourhood algorithm for the simultaneous inversion.

Joint inversion of ReMi dispersion curves and refraction travel times using particle swarm optimization algorithm
Shear-wave velocity ( ) is an important parameter used for site characterization in geotechnical engineering. However, dispersion curve inversion is challenging for most inversion methods due to its high non-linearity and mix-determined trait. In order to overcome these problems, in this study, a joint inversion strategy is proposed based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The ...

In this study, we obtained two-dimensional tomography maps of the Rayleigh wave group velocity for the northwest part of the Iranian Plateau in order to investigate the structure of the crust and the uppermost mantle of NW Iran. To do this, the local earthquake data during the period 2006-2013, recorded by the 10 broadband stations of the Iranian seismic network (INSN) were used. After the prel...

We analyze seismic data using multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW) to invert multi-mode surface-wave dispersion curves into 1D vertical shear-wave velocity profiles. The dispersion-curve patterns of the Rayleigh wave are imaged using conventional methods and the high-resolution linear radon transform (HRLRT). Comparison of these imaging techniques shows that the HRLRT provides higher ...

Existing algorithms for inversion of dispersion-curves estimated from analyzing the seismic surface-wave data provide a reasonable representation of the overall shear-wave velocity structure. However, in some cases these results may not meet the resolution requirement of the survey objectives targeting the upper portion of the subsurface section. Near-surface geophysical surveys often look for ...

[1] In their study of upper mantle structure beneath the Paraná Basin of SE Brazil, Snoke and James [1997] concluded, on the basis of a linearized least squares inversion (LLSI) of surface wave dispersion data, that a strong (5% contrast) low-velocity zone (LVZ) beginning at a depth less than 150 km was not required to fit the data. They were unable to establish a quantitative estimate, however...
